Read Psalm 84:1-7
BIBLE THOUGHT: “ Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs.” (Psalm 84:5-6, NIV)
The first time I read this passage I visualized a dry, trashy yard transformed into a beautiful garden by people who cared.
But what is the Valley of Baca? I discovered the phrase could be translated as “the valley of weeping,” or “the valley of the balsam trees.” The balsam tree is called a “weeper” because the gum and moisture trickle down the trunk. So the “valley of weeping” is not a geographic location, but a picturesque expression for times that have a special need for blessings.
And people who find their strength in God Almighty do amazing things. Because they have “set their hearts on pilgrimage” they don’t have to spend their time and money on accumulating stuff for themselves.
Energy is released for things like visiting the sick, counseling the confused and cheering the sad. They are the people who know how to give cheer with one little flower, one can of paint, a few minutes with a broom, a smile, a hug, or a kind word.
I know I’ve certainly been “watered” by that kind of person, haven’t you?
Hymn: “Brighten the Corner Where You Are.”.
Prayer: Father, help me to find my strength in you so I can leave your “signature” on the pages of my life as I minister to others. In Jesus Name, Amen
