Attitude Toward the Bible – a simple and complex issue

SIMPLE – It depends on your world view.

If you believe that the world is a closed system and that nothing can enter from outside,  you will look for another explanation than the Bible account.  I think that view also includes the belief that life began by chance, with no intelligence  involved in creation.  Correct me if I am wrong.

If you believe that life in this unique world and the marvelous expanse of the universe would had to have been planned and brought into existence by a being infinitely greater than man, then you will at least read the biblical account as a possible explanation.

COMPLEX – Differing interpretations of the Bible teachings have been at the root of many evils in the world.  Yet, much that is good in the world has been done by people who are sincere believers in the God of the Bible.

MY CONCLUSION – I have read through the Bible often and studied the text carefully.  It is a remarkable unified story.  I believe it is reliable history.  The traditional view is that it was written by about 40 different authors during a span of about fifteen hundred years.  Many scholars have spent a lot of time and energy trying to prove that view is or isn’t true.  (And what does that mean anyway to a generation that believes there is no such thing as truth?)

CHALLENGE – Read enough of the life of Jesus to decide whether he appeals to you in any way.  If you are not interested, you are not interested.  Apparently there were only 120 disciples with enough interest to gather together after his death.  But the apostles were convinced that he was the Messiah promised in the Old Testament and that he rose from the dead.  They gave their lives because they believed the promises of the Christ.
