Another New Year Memory

1983 – Urbanización Matellini, Lima, Perú

That was the year that Ellen and Jim and little Esther visited us.  We were seated around our dining table eating the prescribed 12 grapes each for good luck during the coming year. The current went off exactly at the stroke of midnight, or maybe a few minutes afterwards.  It was a little disconcerting, since it was during a time when the political situation was a little shaky.    But it returned quickly and we finished our grapes and talked about other traditions.  Was that where I learned that it brought good luck to wear yellow underwear for New Years’ Eve?  And is that where I learned that if I wanted to travel during the coming year I should go out at midnight and carry a suitcase around the block?
